BAT at ORLEN Południe

07-11-2018

ORLEN Południe S.A. implements a project including adaptation of production installations to requirements of the BATs (Best Available Technologies). They are the most effective and advanced development level of technologies and methods of carrying out given activities.

The BATs are used as a basis for determining borderline emission values, aimed at eliminating emissions. And if this is impossible to achieve in practice – as a basis for reducing emissions and impact on the environment as a whole. The technique means both the technology applied and the manner in which a given installation is designed, made, exploited and liquidated.

The objective of the project is to implement recommendations in line with the guidelines contained in conclusions pertaining to:
- the Best Available Technologies (BATs) with reference to crude oil and gas refineries in accordance with the Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on industrial emissions,
- the Best Available Technologies (BATs) with reference to the production of large volume organic chemicals in accordance with the Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on industrial emissions,
- the Best Available Technologies (BATs) with reference to the waste processing in accordance with the Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on industrial emissions.

Implementation of the LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) system is one of the requirements covered by the project – a working practice intended for identification of leaky elements of installations. Through a repair of these elements, emission of volatile organic compounds may be reduced. This system enables elimination or reduction of nuisance caused by the smell related to work of the Plant. Execution of this task directly arises from the environmental law in force. However, benefits from implementation of the program are numerous and will allow:
- decreasing losses of the raw material or product,
- increasing safety & security of operators and other staff members,
- increasing process safety,
- decreasing the impact on local community,
- decreasing charges for emission.
